From Grand Designs to
Greener Homes

Our first business was set up in Oxfordshire to support ambitious self-builders on their “grand designs” projects. These homes demanded carefully integrated mechanical, electrical, and renewable systems — and we thrived on the challenge.

But as time went on, we realised that the biggest opportunity to make a difference wasn’t limited to one-off dream builds. The UK is full of ageing homes that urgently need upgrading to be warmer, cheaper to run, and kinder to the environment. By focusing our expertise on these properties, we could help more people and achieve a far greater environmental impact.

That’s why Heat Horizons was born: to bring innovative renewable solutions to everyday homes, making them more sustainable for the future. Every so often, we still lend our ingenuity and experience to a striking grand design, but our mission is firmly rooted in transforming the UK’s existing housing stock.

Johnathan’s Journey

Johnathan began his career straight out of university, at a time when jobs were scarce but solar was booming. His first role was as an assistant panel fitter, carrying modules from the ground to the roof. It wasn’t glamorous, but it gave him the foundation to quickly move into project management and, not long after, to start his own renewable business.

To this day, Johnathan’s enthusiasm for new technology hasn’t dimmed. He’s known for keeping a close eye on system performance, making small tweaks to squeeze out more efficiency. The first frosty morning of the year is always a highlight for him, the perfect time to see how the latest heat pumps are performing in real-world conditions.

The Design to Installation Process

Amy’s Journey

Amy is a planner through and through, with a sharp eye for detail that everyone around her secretly admires (and occasionally finds frustrating!). She spent over a decade working in emergency planning, including as an on call Crew Manager in the Fire Service, and played a key role during the COVID-19 pandemic helping councils deliver emergency responses.

When Johnathan’s renewable business began to grow rapidly, Amy stepped in to bring structure and organisation to the expansion. Her ability to manage people, systems, and detail became an essential part of the company’s success, and remains central to how Heat Horizons operates today.

We don’t just design and install renewable systems, we live with them. Recently, we completed an eight year full renovation of our own 1930s bungalow, installing solar PV, home batteries, and a heat pump. Experiencing the technology first-hand has given us unique insight into how these systems work day-to-day, helping us guide our clients with honesty and real-life comparisons.

Why Heat Horizons?

Because for us, this isn’t just about technology, it’s about impact. Every system we install makes a home more comfortable, more efficient, and less reliant on fossil fuels. Together, these changes add up to something bigger: cutting carbon, lowering costs, and helping shape a more sustainable future for the UK.
